Internet usage worldwide

Nowadays, 3.97 billion of people have an internet access worldwide. In Smartdataprod, we investigated to tell you about the most interesting data about internet usage in 2021.

How are users accessing internet worldwide?

Even though more than half of the worldwide population has an internet access in 2021, its access differs a lot between the different regions in the world. The world region with higher access to internet is Northern Europe, with 97% of its population being connected. In comparison, Easter Asia only has 71% of its population being connected, while China is the country with the highest number of internet users in the world (854 million).

Internet access is more common from mobile than from home. Effectively, only 15.2% of the worldwide population has a fixed broadband subscription, while 75% has a mobile broadband subscription.

What are the users doing on internet?

First of all, it is worth noting that internet users belong mostly to the 25-34 age group. This information supposedly explains the following data that we share.

The worldwide population’s average time of connection represents 170 minutes a day… with 145 minutes spent on social media platforms! The big winner of these platforms keeps being Facebook, with more than 2.8 billon active users worldwide.

Moreover, we spend a lot of time watching videos on streaming platforms, buying on e-commerce platforms, or just working. You can find more information about it in our article “we spend a third of our lives online”.

In Smartdataprod, we work continuously to improve the internet access to people, through fibre optic and 5G. If you wish to join us in this challenge, contact us to talk together about what we could do.
